Alina Schuster is a structural engineer with a focus on integrating parametric approaches into structural engineering workflows and creating systems to increase carbon efficiency of structures. She studied Civil Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg. During that time, she also joined Bollinger+Grohmann for her semester internship, where she continues to work today. She received her Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from TU Vienna, where she introduced the “Structural Performance Carbon Rating”, a novel performance-based system for assessing the embodied carbon of structural elements. At i.sd she is currently working on her PhD, which is part of the SFB Advanced Computational Design funded by the Austrian Science Fund, FWF. The dissertation is aiming to extend the research on carbon performance of structures and provide engineers with actionable tools to significantly reduce the embodied carbon of their projects and foster a more sustainability-oriented design culture in structural engineering.
