Specialised AI Agents for Collaborative Design Systems
The lecture introduces an approach to AI integration in design, based on developing specialised assistants that collaborate with human designers to address specific tasks. It presents AI-based design systems for structural and performance-based applications, highlighting the role of designers in shaping technologies that augment, rather than replace, human capabilities.
Gabriele Mirra is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architectural Engineering and Technology at Delft University of Technology, where he researches and teaches computational design and machine learning methods for performance-based design. He holds an MSc in Architecture from the University of Naples Federico II (Italy) and a PhD in AI in Design from The University of Melbourne (Australia), completed in 2022. His work has focused on the design and optimisation of large-span structures and acoustic shells, as well as on training AI models for specific design tasks and deploying them as design assistants within CAD environments. His current research investigates AI for circular design processes, the development of human-AI interfaces, and the impact of AI on design cognition and outcomes.
