Johannes Schafelner studied at the Technical University Innsbruck, Politechnico di Milano and University of Applied Arts Vienna at Studio Hadid, before joining ZHA in 2006. He is now Director at ZHA and delivered a wide range of products, installations, and architectural projects. He led ZHA’s first project in New York. Other major projects include the design for the London 2012 Olympic Aquatic Centre and Roca Gallery. More recently, Johannes has led the Songshan Lake Performance Centre in Dongguan, as well as several large-scale masterplans such as the Aljada Masterplan in Sharjah, UAE, and Chengdu Unicorn Island in China, which are nearing completion.

Beyond his projects, Johannes has played a key role in shaping ZHA’s direction. He served on the Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) board as a director, ensuring the practice’s commitment to its culture, reputation, and decision-making. As part of the People + Culture Committee, he contributes to office-wide management and strategic planning for the future.
