AUGMENTED ARCHITECTURE – Integrating Augmented Reality (AR) in architectural design and construction processes

Dr. Garvin Goepel specialises in the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in architecture, with a focus on how human and machine intelligence can collaborate in the design and making of the built environment. He combines his practice “Augmented Architecture Ltd.” with his position as Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) where he teaches across the Master of Architecture, MSc in Advanced Architectural Design, and BASc Design+ programmes and conducts research as co-director of the Building Simplexity Lab (BSL).

His research advances studies in collaborative holographic-driven construction, expands opportunities for technology-infused craftsmanship, and reflects on workflows that replace conventional drawing-based communication with holographic instruction. He believes that AR, has the ability to enhance human capacities to participate in complex processes through simplified instructions, rather than surrendering human skills to automation in manufacturing.

He received his Master of Architecture with distinction from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna (Studio Greg Lynn) and gained professional experience with practices including Coop Himmelb(l)au. He completed his PhD at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as a Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme awardee, and researched at ETH Zurich’s Block Research Group.

His build design work includes the award-winning mixed-reality artwork “Resonance-In-Sight” for the Hong Kong Museum of Arts (HKMoA) as a co-artist and the AR consultancy for multiple build projects such as the World Architecture Festival (WAF 2024) award-winning bamboo pavilion MemutAR. He served on the CAADRIA 2021 organising committee and co-chaired the CAAD Futures 2025 Conference.
